Abstract. Geographically referenced user generated content provides us with an opportunity to, for the first time, gather perspectives on place over large areas by exploring how very many people describe information. We present a framework for analysing large collections of user generated content. This involves classification of descriptive terms attached by users to photographs into facets of elements, qualities, and activities. We apply this framework to two contrasting photographic archives — Flickr and Geograph, representing weakly and strongly moderated content respectively. We propose a method for removing user–generated bias from such collections though the user of term profiles that can assess the effect of the most and least prolific contributors to a collection. Analysis and visualization of co–occurrence between terms suggests clear differences in the description of place between the two collections, both in terms of the facets used and their geographical footprints. This is attributed to the role of moderation/editorialising of content; to the role tags and free–text have on descriptive behaviour and to the geographic footprint of content supplied by the two collections.

FOSS principles and methodologies are the best case studies you can find for tried and proven online collaboration with constructive outcomes. FOSS applications provide reference implementations for pretty much anything, which government can build upon and customise. A finales del mes de julio todo el equipo meipi se traslada a lo largo de 3 días en Gijon, donde tendrá lugar el encuentro internacional de Cartografía Ciudadana organizado por Pablo de Soto (hackitectura.net), promotor de algunos de los más interesantes proyectos de cartografía, algunos de los cuales utilizando meipi como herramienta: “meipi asturies” y “this is rafah“. Puesto que este encuentro reunirá a una amplía red de investigadores y agentes activos entre arquitectos, urbanistas, artistas, geógrafos y programadores, nos parece la mejor ocasión para lanzar la versión open source de Meipi, que de momento hemos llamado Meipi Open/s. Lo más difícil de un proyecto open source es generar una comunidad interesada en desarrollar y mejorar el proyecto: una comunidad que haga suyo el proyecto. Este encuentro nos permitirá estrenar la plataforma open source en un ambiente colaborativo muy interesante y altamente interesado por la gerreferenciación colectiva. Para los próximos meses tenemos muy claro cual será nuestro reto: dar a conocer a cuanta más gente posible lo interesante que es la nueva herrramienta Meipi Open/s, y organizar y documentar adecuadamente todo el código.Bueno quizás nos hemos ido con la mente ya al post-gijon, en realidad todavía nos queda trabajo para llegar al encuentro con la versión beta de Meipi Open/s y en estos días estamos ya currando a tope para llegar en las mejores de las condiciones. También estamos trabajando en la nueva “imagen” y logotipo de la versión open source.
